Free Case Study Lessons

Twelve real-world business acumen case studies, each three pages: what happened, the numbers behind it, and a team activity to run in your next meeting. Sears, Southwest, Toys"R"Us, MoviePass, Apple, Nintendo, and more. Run one a week for a quarter, or one a month for a year. Either way, they'll be talking about cash, profit, assets, growth, and people by the end of it.

Free Live Session: How to Listen to an Earnings Call

We pick a public company, pull its most recent earnings call, and walk through what leadership actually said about cash, profit, assets, growth, and people. Live, an hour, no slides full of theory. You'll leave able to read your own company's numbers the same way — and with a much better answer the next time an executive asks what you think of their quarter.

From the what…

The quarter, in plain language. We start with what the company reported and translate it. Not the headline number — the drivers underneath it, and which one leadership is actually worried about.

To the so what?

What executives really said. Their own words, from their own call. What they chose to lead with, what they hedged on, and what the analyst questions tell you about where the pressure is coming from.

To the now what?

The part most training skips. How this changes the question you ask, the meeting you request, and the way you frame your next big growth idea.

What Free Won't Do

Everything on this page will make you smarter about business. None of it is built around your company.

That's the line. Our paid work starts where the free stuff stops: we analyze your financials, your strategy, and the metrics your executives actually care about. We put your P&L on the screen, not a case study. We debrief your earnings call, or your customer's. Then we stay, quarter after quarter, and keep it current.

If the free resources are useful, that's the whole point. If you want them pointed at your business, that's a conversation.

What is business acumen?

Business acumen is the ability to understand how a business makes money and to make decisions that improve its results. In practice it means being able to read a company's numbers, understand what's driving them, and connect your own work to what leadership actually cares about. It's the difference between knowing your job and knowing how your job affects the business.

What are the 5 Business Drivers?

Cash, profit, assets, growth, and people. Every business decision affects at least one of them, and executives evaluate almost everything through that lens. Learning to see a company through those five drivers is the core of what we teach — it's the framework behind Seeing the Big Picture and every course we run.

Do I need a finance background for any of this?

No. Everything on this page is written for people who don't have one — that's the whole point. If you can read a sentence about a company, you can follow the case studies, the live session, and the assessment. We avoid accounting jargon, and where a term matters we define it.

Is this really free? What's the catch?

There isn't one. The case studies, the live session, and the assessment ask for an email so we can send them to you. The podcast, Q&A, and glossary don't ask for anything. Nothing on this page is a trial, a preview, or a teaser for a paid version.

Who is this for?

Anyone who needs to understand the business behind their work — sales professionals selling to executives, managers who sit in budget conversations, and individual contributors who want to see how their work connects to results. The assessment lets you choose whether you're taking it as a business leader or a sales professional, and the questions adjust accordingly.

How is the Business IQ Assessment scored?

Twenty-five questions, five per driver, one point each. You get a score for each of the five drivers plus a total out of 25, and you'll see how your self-rating compared to how you actually scored. It takes about four minutes, and you'll get one specific question to take into your next conversation based on where you scored lowest.

How often is the live earnings call session?

Once a month. We pick a public company, walk through its most recent earnings call, and translate what leadership actually said. It runs about an hour, it's open to your whole team, and everyone who registers gets the recording and workbook — including people who can't attend live.

Can I use the case studies with my team?

Yes. Each of the twelve case studies is three pages with a team activity built into the last page, designed to be run in a normal meeting. Use one a week for a quarter or one a month for a year — no license, no permission needed.

What's the difference between the free session and paid Earnings Call Debriefs?

The free session covers a public company we choose. Paid Earnings Call Debriefs cover the companies that matter to you — your own, the ones you sell to, or the ones you compete against — privately, with your team, quarter after quarter.

What does business acumen training cost?

It depends on format and group size. The self-paced online course is $295 for a year of access. Live and custom training is priced per engagement, since it's built around your financials and your industry. Talk with a strategist and we'll give you a real number.
