Building Business Acumen® Essentials™
Certify Your Trainers
Bring world-class business acumen training in-house. We certify your trainers to teach the 5 Business Drivers, so you can reach every team, at every site, on your own schedule, without an Acumen Learning consultant in every room.

A business acumen course anyone can teach.
The floor is low. The ceiling isn't.
Building Business Acumen® Essentials™ is a train-the-trainer certification designed to be taught by your corporate trainers, your finance team, or… by you.
Every module comes with the story already written, the case study already built, and Kevin Cope — our founder and the author of Seeing the Big Picture — already on video explaining the concept. A certified trainer can stand up, set the stage with a story we scripted, press play, debrief what the room just learned, and move to the next driver. That's a real business acumen course, delivered by someone who was nervous about teaching finance month ago.
We Wrote the Book on Business Acumen (Literally).
Acumen Learning is the sole-source provider of business acumen training based on the #1 Wall Street Journal and New York Times bestseller, Seeing the Big Picture. We don't just teach business acumen; we defined it.

The 5 Business Drivers®
None of this works without a framework. Take away the model and you're asking a nervous trainer to improvise a finance lecture, which is exactly how business acumen training goes wrong.
The 5 Business Drivers — Cash, Profit, Assets, Growth, and People — are what make it work at both ends of the room. They give your trainer solid ground to stand on: a principled model they can teach with confidence even if finance isn't their background. And they give your employees a way in, because five levers are something anyone can hold in their head, no matter their department or their comfort with a balance sheet.
That's the foundation. The videos, the stories, the case studies, and the flexibility all sit on top of it.

Reach Everyone. On Your Terms.
Our fully-facilitated programs are what we're known for, and for the right audience and initiative, nothing beats having our consultants in the room. But that's not every situation. Sometimes you need to reach a lot of people, in a lot of places, on a schedule that's yours. We built Essentials for you.
The Two-Hour Problem
Ask most training vendors for two-hour sessions and the price goes up, because every session means another block of a consultant's time. Ask for anything beyond off-the-shelf and it goes up again, because tailoring content to your business isn't free either. The economics are the economics.
Certification changes them. Once your trainers are certified to teach the course, you're no longer buying consultant days every time you want to run it. That hands you three things you've probably never gotten to control: who can teach business acumen, how deep the training goes, and when and how it happens. Three dials. You set all three.
A new trainer sets the stage, presses play on Kevin's video, and debriefs what the room learned. A confident one teaches the concepts themselves. Same certification, wherever your trainer is on the curve.
Run it exactly as it ships, with our stories and case studies, and it works. Or go deeper with your own financials, strategy, and P&L on the screen. As deep as your trainer is ready to take it.
A one-day intensive. Two days. Four hours a quarter. An hour a month virtually. Deliver it on your calendar, around your learning culture, however your people actually learn best.
Your Trainers Don't Need to Be Finance Experts. That's the Whole Point.
Our consultants don't need a script. Financial strategy is what they do all day. Most corporate trainers can't work that way, and shouldn't have to. So we didn't ask them to.
Essentials is engineered for the trainer who finds teaching finance intimidating. Kevin Cope explains the hardest concepts on video, so your trainer is never the smartest finance person in the room. The stories are scripted. The activities, discussion guides, and case studies have been tested and proven in Fortune 500 classrooms.
And if you do have finance talent, put it to work.
Some of our best certified trainers come from inside the finance team. Certifying a high-potential finance leader turns a training decision into a development one: they teach the course across the business, spending real time with Ops, HR, Sales, and Engineering, and they come back knowing how the company actually runs and who actually runs it. Your people get business acumen. Your rising finance leader gets a lay of the land no rotation program could give them.
- Kevin Cope explains the hard concepts on video
- The stories, already scripted
- Case studies, built and tested
- The 5 Business Drivers framework
Facilitation. Reading the room. Knowing your people, your culture, and what will actually land. The thing they're already great at, and the one thing we can't ship in a box.
Frequently Asked Questions About Building Business Acumen Essentials
What exactly is Building Business Acumen Essentials?
Do our trainers need a finance background?
No, and that's the point. Essentials is designed for trainers who find teaching finance intimidating. Kevin Cope, our founder, explains the hardest concepts on video, so your trainer is never the smartest finance person in the room. The stories are scripted, and the activities, case studies, and simulations are already built and tested. Your trainer brings facilitation skill. The curriculum brings the finance.
Can someone from our finance team teach it?
Absolutely, and it's one of the best uses of the program. Certifying a high-potential finance leader turns a training decision into a development one. They teach the course across the business, spending real time with Ops, HR, Sales, and Engineering, and they come back knowing how the company actually runs and who actually runs it. Your people get business acumen. Your rising finance leader gets a view of the company no rotation program could give them.
Can a trainer go deeper as they get more comfortable?
Yes. That flexibility is built in. A new trainer can set the stage, press play on the video, and debrief what the room learned — a real course, delivered with confidence on day one. A seasoned trainer can teach the concepts themselves, swap our stories for your company's, and walk the room through your actual P&L instead of a sample one. Same certification, wherever your trainer is on the curve.
How long does the training take to deliver?
However long you want. A one-day intensive. Two days. Four hours a quarter. An hour a month virtually. Once your trainers are certified, you're not buying consultant days every time you want to run it, so you can shape delivery around your learning culture instead of a travel calendar.
How is this different from your fully-facilitated training?
Same framework, different design. With our fully-facilitated programs, our consultants teach your team, and they do it without a script because financial strategy is what they do all day. Essentials is engineered so your own people can teach it without that background. The videos, scripts, and prebuilt materials carry the expertise.
Fully-facilitated is the better fit for a focused audience that wants a deeply customized experience built around your business. Essentials is the better fit when you need to reach a lot of people, in a lot of places, on your own schedule. If you're not sure which you are, a strategist can help you figure it out in a short conversation.
How does licensing work?
Certified trainers are licensed to teach the course, and participant materials are purchased per cohort. That means your cost scales with how many people you actually train, and you're only paying for your internal trainer's time to run a session.
How many trainers should we certify?
It depends on your workforce size, how many sites you're covering, and how fast you want to move. That's exactly the kind of thing a strategist can scope with you in a short conversation.
